The Changing World

1. Heavy industry and transportation on parade.
2. Telephone service began in Japan at the end of 1890. Here a beauty is making requests to Ebisu, a god of prosperity.
3. Ebisu, the god of prosperity, is dressed in the latest fashions, is offering guaranteed watches and parts from around the world.

Politicized Ads

4. A Japanese sailor pulls the nose of the evil Russian to protect the small, weak Koreans, Chinese, British and Americans.
5. Fukusuke, a prosperity figure, dressed in military uniform, stomps on Russians while he proclaims a big sale.
6. The hawk (symbolizing boldness), naval rising sun flag, gun and ship all represent support for the war effort.

7. This beauty is surrounded by a very Victorian grouping of roses.
8. A story unfolds as a maiden gazes longingly out the window. The peonies in the vase symbolize love.
9. This beauty holds a statue of Ebisu, patron god of prosperity for the merchant class.

Dreams of Prosperity

10. A traditional grouping of symbols of longevity.
11. Big-headed Fukusuke, who represents prosperity, and a boy in a sailor suit, pour out prosperity in the form of coins and Ebisu, the god of prosperity. The container is a wooden sake cup (masu), a homophone for “increase”
12. A traditional grouping of the Seven Gods of Prosperity. These characters were uniquely Japanese, but influenced by Chinese and Indian mythology.
