Autograph hotels are an upscale branch of Marriott hotels that bring together independent hotels and resorts under the Marriott name. It is known as a historic site to Spain. The first of these hotels in Europe are set to appear in Spain this month, where the company is adding four properties currently owned by AC Hotels into the exclusive group.

These Spain hotels include the historic AC Santo Mauro and AC Palacio del Retiro in Madrid, which have been converted from houses into five-star properties with 50 rooms each. A former convent in Granada, the AC Palacio de Santa Paula, and a ski resort in the Pyrenees, the AC Baqueira Hotel & Spa, will also join the collection. The introduction of Marriott's new brand in Spain is upping the competition against the country's homegrown hotel chains NH Hoteles and the Paradores group. Paradores is a state-run enterprise that also operates luxury properties in converted historic buildings.
